CarMax provides an award-winning workplace where we help every associate redefine their career journeys and achieve their best — at work and in their community. We are committed to hiring people with strong values of integrity, transparency, and respect.
CarMax has always known our associates are our most important asset. As President and CEO Bill Nash puts it: “CarMax is unique and different from other automotive retailers because of our incredible associates. In fact, the success of our company is due to our associates. They are extremely passionate about providing the honest and transparent car-buying experience every customer deserves.”
At CarMax, “we put people first” is one of our core values. We do this for our associates by offering:
CarMax is a dynamic growth company where learning and development are embedded in our culture. We always have new stores, new associates, and new ideas for making CarMax a great company to work for. The training resources we provide are anything but “one size fits all.” They span various types and methods of learning, from individual plans, to one-on-one mentoring, shoulder-to-shoulder, online courses, and beyond.
In fact, CarMax annually appears on Training magazine’s “Training Top 125” list. Interested in learning more about our development opportunities?
Plus a Tuition Assistance Program, Technician Training Reimbursement, and a Service Operations Scholarship Award Program further ensure that the opportunity to advance and grow through learning is a realistic and attainable goal for our associates.
The impact of jobs and benefits like those enjoyed by CarMax associates is felt not only at home, but throughout the community, because happy, healthy associates contribute to a flourishing community. To that end, CarMax urges associates to achieve a balance between their personal and work lives, encouraging everyone to take time away for rest, relaxation, and personal needs with paid time-off options that include holidays, vacation and sick time, personal days, parental leave, and time away.
CarMax is also there to offer help when it’s needed, with programs like Disaster Relief, company-paid Short-Term Disability, and Adoption Assistance. And we’re proud of a policy that extends medical benefits to our associates’ domestic partners regardless of gender.
Physical fitness, nutrition, finances, and even emotional health are all part of an overall work-life balance that CarMax encourages its associates to find. We offer a wide range of initiatives and tools that not only promote our associates’ overall wellness at work and at home, but that also demonstrate CarMax’s commitment to addressing issues of wellness — ranging from smoking cessation to weight management. Our programs include:
The CarMax culture of diversity and inclusion is built on a foundation of integrity and respect, driven by our core values.
Our associates live these values, embrace our differences, and challenge perceptions. As a company, we nurture a culture where innovation thrives and our workforce reflects the communities we serve.
Our Commitment to Diversity
We do the right thing by treating everyone with respect, and we win together because our teams are strengthened by embracing our differences. We have an expectation that our associates follow Our Commitment to Diversity Policy, which articulates our commitment to welcoming, respecting, and celebrating the unique attributes of our associates, customers, and communities.
We celebrate and reward our successes as individuals, but also as store teams, as regional teams, and as a company. In fact, 88 percent of our associates say people care about each other here while 84 percent say this is a fun place to work.
Just some of the ways we build and maintain this culture include activities built around celebrating and rewarding our achievements. For example, CarMax recognizes top store associates through membership in Director’s Club and President’s Club. Each fall, all President’s Club members, along with a guest, are invited to a formal recognition gala in Las Vegas with the senior management team. There are also steak cookouts hosted by senior executives and fun, associate-run activities held in recognition of stores where performance is particularly strong.
